I believe that most people first ideas of getting older develop from their grandparents. At least that was the case for me. I was lucky enough to have such amazing, sweet, generous, active, and connected grandparents all through my child hood. But even though with that, I still remember looking at getting older as not as much fun. They could not run around they playground like I could, they could not jump in the lake and go skiing, rollarblade around the neighborhood, or do most of the things kids find fun! This made me scared to get older.
I always had a passion for taking care of people, but it was not until my grandfather became extremely ill with Alzheimer that I realized how much elders needed our help. Every day activities for him became impossible. This only heightened my fear of aging.
One night while I was tending to him, he could tell that I was uncomfortable. He started talking to me about how much he enjoyed his life and that what was going on was not so scary. I started looking at becoming older in a new perspective. I realized that getting older is just proof of a entire life and fulfillment someone has already experienced. I have learned that you need to make every moment count because life will fly by quickly.
